Henry Gilbert
London-based Electric/Double Bass Player | Jazz Musician

Henry Gilbert is a versatile bassist based in London, with a career spanning over a decade on the UK music scene. A native of southeast London, Henry’s musical journey began at 15 when he first picked up the guitar before transitioning to the electric bass. His growing passion for jazz led him to study double bass at Middlesex University, where he honed his craft and deepened his love for the genre.

Since graduating, Henry has carved out a name for himself as a sought-after bassist, performing both domestically and internationally. His musical foundation is deeply rooted in the swing era, drawing heavy inspiration from jazz giants such as Ray Brown, Jimmy Blanton, Walter Page and the early slap bass pioneers like Wellman Braud, Pops Foster and Milt Hinton. The driving, commanding rhythm of these players is central to Henry’s approach, which he brings to every musical setting.

Henry’s style is further shaped by the iconic trios of Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole, and the Benny Goodman small groups, which have influenced his swing sensibilities and approach to ensemble playing. Over the years, Henry’s reputation as a dynamic and versatile performer has led to collaborations across a wide range of jazz subgenres, with a focus on the rich history and tradition of swing.

On the electric bass, Henry has dedicated years to studying the foundational work of trailblazers such as James Jamerson, Larry Graham, Louis Johnson and Jaco Pastorius, incorporating their innovative techniques into his own playing. Whether on electric or double bass, Henry’s ability to combine technical mastery with deep musicality has made him a respected figure on the UK music scene.
